EU Revision of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulations

On December 17, 2014, the European Commission issued Regulation (EU) No 1342/2014, which revised the EU's persistent organic pollutants (POPs) Regulations (EC) No 850/2004 Appendix IV and V. The revised content will be published in 2015. Effective on June 18 of the year.

The main contents of this revision include:

1. Set the minimum concentration limits for PBDEs and PFOS and its derivatives;

Limits for organic pollutants Total amount of tetrabromodiphenyl ether pentabromodiphenyl ether Hexabromodiphenyl ether heptabromodiphenyl ether Less than 1000 mg/kg
PFOS and its derivatives 50mg/kg

POPs - Persistent Organic Pollutants

Persistent Organic Pollutants (referred to as POPs) refer to long-range migration through a variety of environmental media (atmosphere, water, organisms, etc.) and long-term presence in the environment, with long-term residual, bioaccumulative, semi-volatile Sexual and highly toxic organic chemicals that pose a serious hazard to human health and the environment, such as DDT, PCBs, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and SCCP. Therefore, major companies and companies are paying more and more attention to controlling POPs in products. Some companies have included POPs such as SCCP and PCBs that are commonly found in electronic and electrical products into environmental management substances for control.

Examples of SCCPs are commonly used as leather coatings, plasticizers in PVC and chlorinated rubber, and flame retardants in plastics and textiles; regulations in the European Union of June 19, 2012 Amendments to (EU) No 519/2013 were identified as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and were added to the list of banned substances in Regulation (EC) No 850/2004.

The amendment limits the SCCP content of any substance or preparation to no more than 1%; it also stipulates that since January 11, 2013, all items must not contain SCCP. From 2013 to 2014, the European Union recalled 28 products containing SCCP including toys, handbags, smart phone cases and skipping ropes.
